Established in 1871, "A. Goetting & Company" began in New York on Spring Street, crafting fine perfumes and household items that were distributed through various retailers. The company was founded by Adolph H. Goetting, a skilled chemist and perfumer from Germany. In 1896, David H. McConnell, the creator of the "California Perfume Company" (later known as "Avon Products Inc."), acquired "A. Goetting & Company". Adolph H. Goetting was appointed as the chief chemist of McConnell's company, known as ''California Perfume Company''. McConnell ran Goetting's business as "Goetting & Co." until at least 1918, maintaining two distinct distribution channels - one for door-to-door sales through the "California Perfume Company" and another for retail sales of "Goetting & Co." products.
