Ted Lapidus
Born in 1929, Ted Lapidus, the founder of the eponymous fashion label, inherited a passion for fabrics and design from his Russian father. After his family emigrated to France, Ted obtained French citizenship and honed his fashion skills under the tutelage of Christian Dior in Paris. In 1951, he established his own fashion house, which quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional craftsmanship and luxurious materials. Initially distributing his creations through various stores and fashion houses, Ted Lapidus opened his first boutiques in 1958. These boutiques showcased unique, handmade pieces that were considered haute couture at the time. While also offering wearable ready-to-wear fashion, it was exclusively produced for other labels. Ted Lapidus' designs gained widespread acclaim, with fashion shows becoming highly anticipated events within the industry. His keen eye for perfectly tailored garments with imaginative and functional details set him apart. Epaulets, patch pockets, and belts were signature elements of his creations. Celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot and John Lennon were fans of Ted Lapidus' distinctive style. In 1970, Ted Lapidus collaborated with L'Oréal to create exclusive women's and men's fragrances. The brand continued to flourish until 1995, when it was acquired by the Jacques Bogart Group.
